yokohama triennale, a thought-provoking collection of art

The City of Yokohama is currently hosting the 8th Yokohama Triennale across five locations in the city, with the Yokohama Museum of Art serving as the primary venue. Since its inaugural event in 2001, the Triennale has aimed to enhance the community's vibrancy and appeal through the power of art.

I unfortunately had time to visit just the Yokohama Museum of Art to see the exhibition, but it was one of the most compelling collection I’ve encountered.

The theme of this Triennale is "Wild Grass: Our Lives." It sheds light on the various crises—conflicts, clashes, incidents, and restrictions—we face in life. However, the message is not one of despair. Instead, the collection conveys that it is through harshness and conflict that we humans strive to live, and out of our will to survive arises creativity and new paradigms.

We often close our eyes to the "dirt," the social strains, as a subconscious act of self-protection. The 2024 Yokohama Triennale compels us to confront the ugliness of the world and still move forward, for it is this resilience that has advanced humanity and will continue to do so.

The Triennale will end on June 9th, so not much time left!
